Juan Carlos Esparza Ochoa is a data manager at the
Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. He is a Ph.D.
candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin,
where his dissertation examines the geographic distribution of Catholic
pastoral services for the poor in Mexico.
Prior to joining the Pew Forum, Juan Carlos worked with Dr. Robert
D. Woodberry at the Project on Religion and Economic Change at the University
of Texas. Before starting his doctorate, he was a professor of social research
and religious studies at several universities in Mexico. Juan Carlos received a
bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac and
in theology from the Colegio Maximo de Cristo Rey. He also has a master’s
degree in social science from the Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico.
