The number of organizations engaged in religious lobbying in
Washington has increased five-fold in the last 40 years, according
to a Pew study released this morning, from fewer than 40 in 1970 to
more than 200 today.
Nearly one in five of those organizations are either Catholic
(19 percent) or evangelical (18 percent), according to the study.
The number of Muslim advocacy organizations (17) is nearly the same
as the number of mainline Protestant organizations (16).
