ALEXANDRIA, Egypt—The elections that began this week in Egypt,
already expected to help transform a nation emerging from decades of
autocratic rule, also holds the potential to push Egypt's powerful
Islamists toward more conservative stances.
Egyptians went to
the polls again Tuesday to complete the first phase of a three-part
election cycle expected to be Egypt's freest elections yet. While the
final results won't be known until mid-January, the contours of Egypt's
next Parliament will soon become clear: The High Election Commission
said initial tallies from the first round will be announced as early as
this week.
