Ministers attacked bishops for being out of touch yesterday after the new Archbishop of Canterbury led stinging Church criticism of the Government’s benefit cuts.
Iain Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said there was nothing “moral or fair” in a benefits system that had trapped people on welfare. Behind the scenes, senior government insiders were furious about the intervention by 43 diocesan and suffragan bishops, which is backed by the Most Rev Justin Welby.
