As the Islamic holy month of Ramadan begins today, Sarah Aboutalib,
who recently earned a doctorate in computer programming at Carnegie
Mellon University, looks forward to renewing her devotion to God.
"There's a lot of stuff I think I've neglected when I was doing my
research," Ms. Aboutalib, 27, of Oakland, said, saying she let research
take precedence over communal prayer and study of the Quran. Now she
wants the guidance of her faith as she decides what to do with her
knowledge of how to make robots see.
