Abu Bakaar Bashir, a white-bearded Muslim cleric from Indonesia, has been known for almost a decade as the Osama bin Laden of Southeast Asia.

He has been accused of fomenting terrorism across the region and inspiring bloody attacks on Christians in Indonesia's Maluku Islands. He was implicated in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people and suspected of being involved in the bombings of two luxury hotels in Jakarta last summer in which nine people died.
