WSJ: Parties in Egypt seek new weapon: Secularists aim to mobilize Sufi masses to combat Islamist clout in elections

CAIRO -- As Egyptian political parties marshal their forces for parliamentary elections next month, the country's secularists have found themselves outmanned by Islamists whose political machines have been poised at the ready for generations.

Some secular-minded politicians now hope to draw strength from an untapped reservoir of moderate religious identity: Egypt's Sufis, who adhere to a mystical, ascetic understanding of Islam that rejects extremism and champions a liberal state.
