CHARLESTON, S.C. - Before Mitt Romney changed his mind on abortion, before Newt Gingrich got divorced for the second time, before Ron Paul became a surprise hit with social conservatives, there was Rick Santorum.

"After I started doing this, when [my children] would read my name in the newspaper, they used to think my first name was 'Ultra,' " said the former Pennsylvania senator at a low-key rally Wednesday in a Spartanburg strip mall's half-filled conference room.
