Outside of the west end
of York Minster tomorrow, 13 willing volunteers from local churches will
be submerged in a tank of water in a series of open-air baptisms that
have become a hallmark of Dr John Sentamu's time in the Church of
England's northern province.
The Archbishop of York,
who will preside, said: "These people are very brave — not just because
they're getting baptised outdoors in the Yorkshire spring — but because
they are publicly declaring that they are making a U-turn from sin, evil
and the ways of the world and becoming followers of Christ. From now on
they will, by the help of the Holy Spirit and members of the Church, do
things differently."
