IT was dusk when the gunmen came to Rouki's village in northern Mali and killed her eight-year-old son, Bashir.
She was only a few hundred metres away and said she saw them
shoot him, but she was powerless to help. "I just couldn't get to him,"
she said. "Everyone else was running away. I watched him until he wasn't
moving any more, then I ran as well."
