The Palestinian attempt to become a recognised state at the UN has received a boost after its culture and educational body agreed to its membership.

Unesco's move signals the Palestinians' first clear victory since President Abbas defied US threats to veto his request at the Security Council and went ahead with a diplomatic initiative to seek full UN status in New York two weeks ago.
