LAGOS, Nigeria—President Goodluck Jonathan announced
his intention to run in January's presidential election on Wednesday,
ending months of uncertainty and setting the stage for a standoff with
powerful Muslim Nigerians opposed to his candidacy.
The
announcement, made via Mr. Jonathan's Facebook page, followed months of
meetings to shore up support among Nigeria's political elites and head
off potential rifts that could lead to election violence.
