Resources on the Gay Marriage Debate
The issue
of same-sex marriage continues to make headlines. The California
Supreme Court recently upheld Proposition 8, a voter-approved constitutional amendment banning
same-sex marriage in the state. Meanwhile, New Hampshire is considering
legislation that would make it
the sixth state to legalize gay marriage. The Pew
Research Center's
Forum on Religion & Public Life provides many resources on the debate,
including:
- A recently published Q&A with
church-state law experts Ira "Chip" Lupu and Robert W. Tuttle on the
potential conflict between the legalization of same-sex marriage and the
free exercise of religion
- A November 2008 backgrounder on the legal
history of gay marriage
- A May 2008 breakdown of 17 major
religious groups' views on gay marriage and the ordination of gay clergy
