Tensions Between Rights of Conscience and Civil Rights
Until recently, the debate over "conscience protections" for health care workers centered largely on abortion and birth control. But in the past few years, new cases have emerged that have expanded the debate and raised questions about the tensions between individuals' rights of conscience and the need to protect certain groups against discrimination, notably gays and lesbians.
 
In a new Pew Forum Q&A, Professors Ira "Chip" Lupu and Robert Tuttle explore the legal issues surrounding these cases.

In an opinion column for The Philadelphia Inquirer, former U.S. senator Rick Santorum criticizes the way the Obama administration has addressed issues related to religious freedom around the globe. He cites a 2009 Pew Forum study that found that Iran, Egypt, Indonesia and Pakistan all have high or very high restrictions on religion.
