OCT. 11 - THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Wall Street Journal columnist William McGurn addresses a controversy that arose at last weekend's Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., when Dallas-based megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress, a supporter of GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry, referred to the Mormon religion as a "cult." McGurn's column features data from a June 2011 Pew Research Center survey, in which 34% of white evangelical Protestants said they were "less likely" to support a Mormon candidate for president. McGurn also points to what he describes as a "much less reported" finding from the survey: A higher percentage of Democrats than Republicans (31% vs. 23%) said they were "less likely" to support a Mormon presidential candidate.
