Religious Freedom Day
Jan. 16 is Religious Freedom Day in the U.S., commemorating the anniversary of the passage of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom in 1786, which laid the foundation for the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom.
 
A recent Pew Forum study finds that although 76% of countries worldwide provide for freedom of religion in their constitutions or basic laws, many of these countries still infringe on religious beliefs and practices in a number of ways.
