Did Religion-Related Campaign Ad Backfire in Kentucky?

The media's post-election analysis of Republican Rand Paul's victory in the race for Kentucky's open U.S. Senate seat has focused heavily on the role of negative advertising. Several news accounts credited Paul's election at least in part to a relgion-related TV ad by his Democratic opponent, Jack Conway, which called Paul's religious beliefs and policy ideas into question. An article on the growing number of mosques in Houston, Texas, cites data from a Pew Forum graphic that shows that the number of mosques in the U.S. increased from 1,209 in 2000 to 1,897 in 2010.
