On Oct. 5, 2011, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a case that could help determine how much latitude religious organizations have in making employment decisions about clergy and others who perform religious duties. Controversy over the Sept. 21 execution of Troy Davis has focused renewed attention on the death penalty. Davis was convicted in 1991 of killing a Georgia police officer. A 2010 Pew Research Center survey found that most Americans (62%) express support for the death penalty for persons convicted of murder. An analysis of trends over time shows that public support for capital punishment has experienced significant rises and dips since the late 1960s, but it has never fallen below 50%.

Pew Forum Senior Researcher and Director of Cross-National Data Brian Grim recently testified before the British Parliament's House of Commons on religious restrictions around the globe. At a Sept. 13 hearing, Grim discussed a 2011 Pew Forum report that found that nearly a third (32%) of the world's population live in countries where government restrictions on religion or social hostilities involving religion rose substantially between mid-2006 and mid-2009. An article comparing attitudes of U.S. and French Muslims cites a recent Pew Research Center report on Muslim Americans. Among the report's findings, 56% of Muslim Americans say that Muslims who come to the U.S. want to adopt American customs and ways of life, while only 33% of the general public say this.
