Controversies Over Mosques and Islamic Centers Across the U.S.
This interactive map provides a brief overview of 35 proposed mosques and Islamic centers that have encountered community resistance in the last two years. In many cases, the opposition has centered on neighbors' concerns about traffic, noise, parking and property values - the same objections that often greet churches and other houses of worship as well as commercial construction projects. Deseret News reporter Scott Taylor explores a recent survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press and the Pew Forum on the role religion plays in public opinion on social issues. Among the findings, 35% of Americans say religion is the top influence on their thinking about same-sex marriage.
