The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear oral arguments in a case, Hosanna-Tabor Church v. EEOC, that examines the scope of a legal doctrine known as the "ministerial exception," which generally exempts religious organizations from anti-discrimination laws when they make employment decisions about their own clergy and other employees with primarily religious duties. A new Pew Forum legal backgrounder addresses the question of why civil courts sometimes treat churches and other religious organizations differently than their secular counterparts.

March 29 - CNN
A new CNN online feature tracking unrest in the Middle East and North Africa cites the Pew Forum's estimate of the number of non-Muslims in Libya. Guma El-Gamaty, a spokesman for the rebels' Interim National Council, recently claimed that the country is "100% Muslim," but the Pew Forum estimates that 3.5% of the population is non-Muslim.
