Minnesota Public Radio Midmorning Show: Social Networking Sites and Teens

I recently appeared as a guest along with Anastasia Goodstein, author of Totally Wired, on the Minnesota Public Radio Midmorning show. The hour was devoted to discussing how teenagers use social networking sites and the wide-ranging influence these applications have on their notions of privacy, safety, communication and self-expression. Findings from our most recent report on the topic, which I co-authored along with Amanda Lenhart, helped to inform the discussion:

Report: “Teens, Privacy and Online Social Networks: How teens manage their online identities and personal information in the age of MySpace”

The hour was hosted by journalist Marianne Combs, and featured live call-in questions from listeners. As is always the case with live radio shows, you never really know what to expect or what direction the conversation might take. In this case, the conversation was fueled by many smart and thoughtful questions from listeners deftly shepherded by a smart and thoughtful host.

Anastasia Goodstein, who has many years of experience studying and writing about American youth and technology, offered fascinating insights and helpful suggestions for parents. You can read her award-winning blog here.

This show should be of special interest to parents, educators, researchers and anyone interested in the way digital communication is shaping the lives of young people.
